Major League Baseball Jerseys
Style Regulations
There are many rules and regulations surrounding Major League Baseball jerseys, including colors for home and away games, uniform matching for team members, sleeve lengths and number requirements.
The official rules for MLB Baseball Jerseys require that all team members have identical uniforms and wear their numbers on the back of their jerseys. There can be no polished metal or glass buttons anywhere on the major league baseball jerseys, nor can their be images of baseballs or advertisements- as each of these style elements could be distracting to other players.
Originally, the home team would always wear a white uniform trimmed in their team colors, while the away teams would wear the colored major league baseball jerseys (sometimes called "road grays".) This served to distinguish one team from the other on the field. The reason the home team wore the white uniforms was because it was easier for the players who were "home" to wash their jerseys than the visiting team! While some teams still adhere to this tradition, including the Yankees and the Cardinals, it is less common now that teams have several different styled MLB Baseball Jerseys.
Third Jerseys
During the 1970's, major league baseball teams started adding a third jersey to their uniform collection of "home" and "road grays". Started by the Pittsburg Pirates, most MLB Baseball Jerseys included a pullover jersey style soon after. Two teams prefer to remain traditional, and have only the original white uniforms for home and colored for away, the New York Yankees and The St. Louis Cardinals. In addition to stylistic reasons for adding a third jersey to the lineup of major league baseball jerseys, one of the primary reasons teams adapted a third jersey style was to encourage sales of the jerseys by fans.
Sleeveless Jerseys
The Cincinnati Reds started wearing sleeveless jerseys (also called vests) from the mid 1950's to 1966, and then again starting in 1993. While other teams have worn sleeveless jerseys from time to time, no other team has worn sleeveless major league baseball jerseys to the extent of the Reds! Currently, there are nine major league teams that utilize vests as part of their uniform. Some, like the Pirates, Reds, and Royals have vests as part of their basic MLB Baseball Jerseys. Other teams, including the Angels, Diamondbacks, and Devil Rays use vests and/or sleeveless jerseys as their alternate uniform
There is no real purpose of wearing sleeveless jerseys or vests, and the choice is primarily for appearance reasons.
